BACKGROUND:
Flame Tokay is one of the rarest grape varieties in California today. It had its heyday up until the 50’s and 60’s in Lodi, after which demands changed. It has been steadily declining ever since, to the point where less than a few acres are left in the whole state. I found it by pure accident and was immediately intrigued by it for winemaking. I’m very glad I took a chance on this variety, because it has proven to make a great wine.

STYLE:
This FLAME TOKAY wine almost didn’t happen at all. I was not happy with the development of the 2020 vintage and decided to not release it. But this particular barrel developed what we think is “Flor”, a spontaneous protective layer of yeast that sits on top of wine in barrel and shields it from oxygen, often used in Sherry winemaking. The development of the wine devoid of much of the oxygen for 36 months transformed it into this savory and hugely complex wine. I was entranced by its new evolution and knew I had to release it as special limited edition bottling. Only 300 bottles made.

VINEYARD:
Chandler Vineyard’s 120 year old vines are showing their excellence here. The vineyard is more of a homestead than a vineyard, with vines scattered all over the property, some vine behind the garage, which makes them a little harder to manage and farm, but the great depth from these old vines makes up for it.
